Bronze Horse
An extremely rare Chinese bronze sculpture of a caparisoned
horse, realistically created for the tomb of a dignitary or official. The head is tossed upward
and tilted right by a bridle, expressing dignity. A high ridge saddle and short saddle cloth,
ornamented with draped medallions, as seen.
The surface of the metal is elaborately
decorated in intricately variegated floral patterns and monogrammed seals of horses. The bronze
is richly patinaed in chestnut brown and golden yellow. The surface is lightly covered with
crabapple green and reddish brown encrustations, with hints of bluish green efflorescense about
the mouth opening and forelegs.
17th/18th century.
