Standing Sakymuni Buddha, Mon Dvaravati Period 7 Century

Sandstone Image:

We are pleased to present this majestic sandstone carving of a standing Sakyamuni Buddha from the Mon Dvaravati period, dating to the 7th century.

Dvaravati statues are characterized by somewhat asexual bodies, an attitude referred to as the 'Triphangha' or Triple flexion posture, a style which demonstrates a placid sense of sensuality, while manifesting an expression of graceful motion and fluidity in a divine manner.

Standing in the frontal posture, the well proportioned torso is covered by the barest hint of a robe, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment that is worn diagonally and covers the left shoulder, and includes an undergarment whose bottom edge hangs lower than the rounded hem of the outter garment. The presence of a belt is suggested by a slight bulge at the the waist. The back of the statue is smooth and featureless, as if the image was designed to be placed next to a wall.

The facial expression is gentle and compassionate and features a somewhat rounded face with down cast eyes, a broad flat nose, and a smiling mouth with rather thick lips. The ridged eyebrows are joined at the center to form a bow. The head is covered by large heavy curls and surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha'.

Height: 24.25 inches(61.60cm) including museum mount.
