Thai Lions

A pair of buddhistic lions, ornamented in the Thai style, with a divine wreathe about the neck and tail. In Thailand, the lion(s) is placed at both sides of an entry to serve as the guardian spirit of the house. They providing strength, protection and ward off the destructive forces of evil.

Each figure with the head tilted back and mouth open, balancing a ball on the tongue. The images stand firmly on four straight legs, which rest on a rectangular plaque.

Potted from earthenware clay and decorated in a celadon green glaze, with traces of reddish brown oxidation. 18th century.
