Bronze Ritual Vessel

Bronze animal-shaped 'zun' vessel, casted in the form of a sacred Mythological Calf. An early chinese ritual vessel created for placement in an ancestrial tomb, where grain could be stored and used in the afterlife. The elongated form of the sculpture allows for three portal openings, with serpentined dragons coiled atop as covers.

Reastically casted, the entire calf is ornamented in intricate motifs of archastic geometric patterns and Tao-Ties, or mythical monster masks.

The surface of the bronze has a smooth brown patina, lightly covered in deposits of malachite, a green copper carbonate encrustation, created by the burial environment.
