Chinese Standing Bodhisattva, Hsuan Te(Xuande)1426-1435, Ming Dynasty

This rare gilt lacquered wood sculpture depicts a male divinity standing in a frontal posture on a square pedestal, ornately scrolled, with both hands in gesture of holding attributes.

The figure radiates a benign facial expression, and is modeled with deep-set eyes, a prominent nose and exquisitely carved lips, the eyebrows carved in high relief form graceful arcs, together with a plump chin and long earlobes. He wears a open-crowned headdress that fits the forehead snugly.

The figure is clad in a long elegante regal style robe worn over a monastic undergarment. The outter robe is heavily pleated and wraps gracefully about the shoulders. The garment is elaborately decorated in floral patterns, intricately painted with lacquer colours and gilt gold. The back of the figure displays the Hsuan Te (Xuande) four-character mark (and of the period) Ming Dynasty.

Height 12.0 inches(30.48cm).
