Buddhist Disciple(Khmer Influence)18th Century
The figure depicts 'Phra Mahagajjayana', a disciple of Buddha, portrayed sitting in meditation. His resemblance to the buddha often led to his being mistaken for him. He thus developed a fat body to appear very different from Buddha. The figure is portrayed seated in the 'Virasana' posture with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands resting palm-open, pointed upwards and lay against his abdomen. The facial expression is gentle and features a rounded face with downcast eyes, a broad flat nose, and a smiling mouth with rather thick lips. The ridged eyebrows are joined at the center to form a bow, elongated earlobes rest at his shoulders. A small band separates the hair line from his forehead with the hair braded in straight lines, falling to his shoulders. The body is plump, covered by the barest hint of a robe, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment that covers both shoulders, entending down over the arms. Elevated from the earth, the image is seated on a simple single-level pedestal. Height 9.25 inches(23.18cm) Length: 11 inches(27.94cm).
