Khmer 'Vishnu' Angkor Wat period
A rare Khmer image of Vishnu from the Angkok Wat period, dating from the second half of the 12th century. The image is depicted seated in a meditation posture with the legs folded in the 'Virasana' pose. The hands placed one hand over the other forming the 'Dhyana' or 'Samadhi' mudra. The facial features depict Vishnu with almond-shaped eyes open, with their engraved pupils outlined, the lips smiling with the slightest trace of a mustache. The eyebrows are connected to form a bow. The hair is folded within an interconnected crown, which terminates into a three tiered conical shaped headdress. The robe is worn diagonally over the left shoulder, with the sash ending just above the navel. The image is seated on the Earth (ground) with no plinth. The bronze surface, with a pitted skin, has aged to a deep chocolate brown color with a soft overlayment of green malachite oxidation. The gray colored clay core within the bronze is of a very hard pottery-like consistency. Height 10.13 inches(25.72cm).
